Belgian peasants presenting a pass to sentries is the subject of this glass negative, one of many images the George Grantham Bain Collection holds from the Bain News Service. The Bain agency, a New York photo service active in the early twentieth century, distributed pictures of current events to newspapers, and its wartime material often showed civilians and soldiers at checkpoints in occupied or frontline areas of Belgium. The caption is taken from unverified notes on the negative or its caption card, so the exact place and date are uncertain. Still, the scene reflects a common reality of the period: rural residents needed papers to move past armed guards, and the exchange between them is the picture's main point.
