Few pictures in the Bain files capture a unit at the moment of departure, and this one shows a Belgian Guides regiment setting out for the front. The Guides were a Belgian army regiment, and the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, circulated images of Allied forces during the First World War, when Belgium was fighting Germany. The title comes from caption information the agency recorded, and the exact date and place are not confirmed, but the subject fits that wartime period. The glass negative preserves fine detail of the men and their equipment, a useful record of how the war was pictured for newspaper readers at home.
