Wounded North African soldiers of the French army, known as Turcos, are the subject here, with Paris as the setting. The Turcos were colonial infantry drawn largely from Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco, and they fought in large numbers on the Western Front after 1914, when the early fighting brought many wounded men into hospitals in and around Paris. The Bain News Service caption gives this title, but the record does not confirm the date, so the scene is best read as a document of the wartime city. George Grantham Bain's agency sold news photographs to American newspapers.
