The Porte Maillot is one of the great gateways on the western edge of Paris, where the broad avenues running out from the city center meet the approaches to the Bois de Boulogne. This glass negative shows a barricade across that busy junction, a reminder that Paris streets were often turned into defensive lines during periods of unrest. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news pictures, made the negative, but its records give no date, and the title comes from caption data that has not been verified. The specific occasion therefore remains uncertain, and the scene is best read as typical of the street fortifications Paris saw in several turbulent periods.
