A glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows a digging trench at Porte Maillot, the gate on the northwestern edge of Paris where the city meets the Bois de Boulogne. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote and that have not been verified. Because the Bain agency worked mainly in the early twentieth century, the scene most likely belongs to the years of the First World War, when defensive trenches were dug in open spaces around the capital. Viewers may want to compare the crew's tools and the ground being turned to see how the work was carried out.
