The caption identifies its subject as Private Wm. Robinson of the Royal Scots Greys, a British cavalry regiment, photographed at a Canadian hospital in Le Touquet on the Channel coast of France. Le Touquet, near Étaples, received large numbers of wounded from the Western Front during the First World War, and its hospitals treated Commonwealth troops, so the setting fits that period. The negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, but the title is unverified and no date is recorded, so the sitter's circumstances and the occasion remain uncertain. Cavalry units like the Greys fought largely on foot in the trench war, which makes a trooper of this regiment in a base hospital worth a closer look.
