A railway car fitted out as a military hospital is the subject here, with the initials "C.P.R.Y." in the title suggesting a Canadian Pacific rail connection, though the record does not confirm the location or date. Such hospital cars were used during the First World War to move wounded soldiers from the front and from port cities to hospitals inland, and the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, circulated images like this to newspapers. The glass negative format and the agency's caption cards date the work to the early twentieth century, when news photographs were carried by rail and wire to readers across the country.
