Taken at the Allis-Chalmers works in West Allis, Wisconsin, this view shows a crowd gathered for William Howard Taft in 1908, the year he won the Republican presidential nomination and then the election to succeed Theodore Roosevelt. The company was one of the largest industrial employers in the Milwaukee area, building heavy machinery such as engines, mining equipment and turbines, so a campaign event there would have drawn factory workers as well as local residents. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced many negatives like this one for newspapers, and the image shows the large open-air gatherings typical of that era's campaigns.
