Taft, who took office as president in March 1909, is shown on horseback beside Gen. Clarence Edwards, an Army officer. The image survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. Its title comes from caption information the agency recorded, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Pictures like this one show how presidents were photographed outdoors, away from formal portraits, during the first year of Taft's administration.
