Francisco I. Madero appears here on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, one of the large-format plates the Bain News Service produced for its wire photographs. Madero, a reformer from Coahuila, led the 1910 revolt against long-serving dictator Porfirio Díaz and served as Mexico's president from late 1911 until he was overthrown and killed in February 1913. The Library of Congress record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Still, the plate offers a direct look at a leader whose brief presidency marked the start of the turmoil that defined the Mexican Revolution.
