A ship moving through the Suez Canal is the subject of this glass negative, though the record gives no date and the title is unverified caption information. The canal, cut across the Isthmus of Suez and opened in 1869, shortened the sea route between Europe and Asia by avoiding the long voyage around Africa, and it became one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied news and travel pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, reflecting strong public interest in distant places.
