Walter Wellman's airship expeditions made Spitzbergen, the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic, their launching point. Wellman used the islands for his early-1900s attempts to reach the North Pole by air, and in 1910 he returned there with the airship *America* for a planned transatlantic crossing. The record gives no date, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the picture fits the Bain News Service's press photographs of the period. The title's word "blimp" is a loose label, since the craft was not a simple blimp, and that distinction matters when comparing it with later airships.
