The Kaiserin Auguste Victoria was a North German Lloyd liner, and this glass negative records a painting of it by Fred Pansing rather than a view taken aboard. Launched in 1905 for the Bremen-based line, the ship was among the largest passenger vessels afloat when it entered transatlantic service and was promoted as a showpiece of German shipbuilding. Because the picture copies an artwork, it shows how the liner was presented to the public, with its long hull and multiple decks shown at their most imposing. The Bain News Service, the New York agency that produced the negative, distributed pictures like this to newspapers in the early twentieth century.
