A small cameo portrait of Eugene Hale, the Republican senator who represented Maine from 1881 to 1911, makes up this glass negative. The cameo format, a head and shoulders vignetted into an oval or fading edge, was a common choice for portraits of public figures because it reproduced cleanly in newspapers and magazines. The record dates the negative to 1908, but the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded itself and has not been independently verified. Glass negatives like this one were the working stock of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to editors across the country.
