Princess Patricia of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, sits reading in this quiet portrait, far from the ceremonial occasions that usually drew press photographers. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied pictures like this to newspapers, and its caption cards were not always checked, so the title is unverified. Princess Patricia later lent her name to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, raised in 1914.
