The sitter appears in the record only as H.M. Hoyt, a title the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, and the record marks that identification as unverified. The image is a cameo portrait, a head-and-shoulders format in which the figure is set against a plain background that fades at the edges, a style common in studio and press portraiture of the period. The negative is dated December 4, 1908. Bain's agency supplied photographs to newspapers in those years, and its glass plates, most of them 5 by 7 inches or smaller, offer a useful record of how working portraits were made in the first decade of the twentieth century.
