Few pictures in the Bain collection show the inside of a working repair shop, and this glass negative shows men at work in the machine shop of a colliery run by the South Manchuria Railway. The railway was founded by Japan after the Russo-Japanese War and operated coal mines and related works in Manchuria, which supplied fuel and industrial materials. The caption places the scene at Chien-Chin, but the Bain News Service recorded its titles from unverified information, so the exact site and date remain uncertain. The Bain agency, a New York press service, sold photographs to newspapers, so its views of distant industry show how such operations were presented to outside audiences.
