Glenn Curtiss and Augustus Herring formed the Herring-Curtiss Company in 1909, and this machine sits on the open ground at Mineola, Long Island, part of the Hempstead Plains where aviators gathered for early flights. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, made the glass negative, but the record gives no date and marks its title as unverified. Pictures like this show powered flight in its first years, when airplanes were experimental machines that drew crowds to open fields.
