Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss stands with four Army lieutenants, Park, Goodier, McLeary and Brereton, in a glass negative dated 1912. Military aviation was still tiny then, with only a handful of officers trained to fly, so a group like this shows how the services were just beginning to take airplanes seriously. Curtiss had already made his name with speed records on motorcycles and with the flying machines he built and demonstrated. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial news photo agency, and its caption details were recorded at the time rather than checked independently.
