Tompkins Square Park, in Manhattan's East Village, is named for Daniel D. Tompkins, the New York governor who later served as vice president under James Monroe. Over the years it was a common gathering place for working-class New Yorkers, and it hosted rallies, protests and public events. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, and the title comes from unverified notes on the negative, so the scene should be read with that caution in mind.
