Union Square in New York is the setting here, and the scene shows a snow plow at work on its streets, a sight that tells you how city crews once cleared winter storms with horses and hand-guided blades. This is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record notes that the title comes from caption information written by the agency and has not been verified, so the exact date of the snowfall is unknown. Still, the picture is worth a close look for its street scene and the working equipment of the period.
