Caption data supplied by the Bain News Service labels this glass negative a Curtiss flying boat, a reference to the hulled aircraft that Glenn Curtiss's company built to take off from and land on water. Flying boats drew wide attention in the early 1910s, when aviation was still new to most newspaper readers. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold images like this to newspapers eager to show their readers the latest machines. Because the title is unverified and no date is recorded, the exact aircraft and occasion remain uncertain.
