The cockpit is the focus here, a low, open seat where the helmsman sat close to the ice and worked the tiller and sheets while the runners hissed across the surface. Ice boats were a popular winter sport on frozen lakes and wide rivers in the northern United States, and skilled sailors could make them travel faster than the wind that drove them. The Bain News Service, which sent photographers out to document news and everyday life in the early twentieth century, recorded many such scenes. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact location and date are not confirmed.
