Two miners stand at the mouth of a coal mine near Scranton, Pennsylvania, in this April 1912 glass negative, caught as they prepare to head out of the workings. The Scranton area was the heart of the anthracite region, where generations of men descended into hard-coal shafts for long, dangerous shifts. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. The title is taken from caption data the agency recorded, so the exact identity of the mine and the men is not confirmed.
