Rescue crews at coal mines in the early twentieth century often relied on self-contained breathing apparatus, heavy helmets fed by air hoses or carried oxygen tanks, to reach men trapped by fire, gas or cave-ins. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers from the 1900s into the 1920s. The Library of Congress notes that its title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives or cards, so the subject is the best guide to what is shown.
