The only identifying clue is the title "Major Jos.," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the record flags that label as unverified, so the sitter's full name and rank remain uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York around 1899 to sell images of news events, public figures and everyday scenes to newspapers that had no photographers of their own. Its glass negatives, mostly 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were sized for quick printing, and the collection now at the Library of Congress preserves a broad view of early twentieth-century American news photography.
