The title on this glass negative, "Chinese R.R.," is brief and comes from caption data that the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been verified, so the exact site and date remain uncertain. The phrase most likely points to a railroad project that employed Chinese workers, a labor force that built much of the western rail network in the nineteenth century, especially the Central Pacific's line over the Sierra Nevada in the 1860s. The Bain News Service, a Washington and New York photo agency, circulated images of many subjects in the early twentieth century, so this negative likely reflects the later period of news and documentary photography rather than the original construction era.
