The record gives little beyond its title, "In a coal mine," and a note that the title comes from unverified caption data, so this glass negative is best understood through the collection it belongs to. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds some 40,000 negatives made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied press photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. Its coal-mining images typically show miners, tools and working conditions in the period when American mines were heavily worked and dangerous. Because the date is unknown, the picture is best read as a glimpse of that industrial era rather than a documented moment.
