Velardeña, a mining town in Durango, is the setting for this view of a smelting works, and the title places it within reach of Torreón in northern Mexico. Smelters like this one reduced ore from nearby mines to metal, usually silver, lead, copper, or zinc, so the stacks, furnaces, and ore-handling yards mark the industrial heart of a settlement built around extraction. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency that sent its cameras to industrial sites, cities, and events across the Americas in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the subject shows how foreign-owned mining operations shaped the Mexican economy during that period.
