This glass negative records Secretary Dickinson at an unveiling honoring Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian officer who trained the Continental Army at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777 to 1778. The record does not give a date or the exact site, but Bain News Service photographers covered many Washington ceremonies of the 1900s and 1910s, when statues of foreign-born Revolutionary War figures were often dedicated with cabinet officials in attendance. Von Steuben's drill regulations remained in use for decades, which helps explain why his memorials drew official crowds.
