This glass negative records a statue of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian-born officer who drilled the Continental Army at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778. Its title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative, which has not been independently verified, so the statue's exact location is unconfirmed. The Bain News Service was a New York press photography agency active in the early twentieth century, and its pictures of monuments often reflect the civic and patriotic commemorations of that era. Von Steuben's memory was especially prominent among German-American communities, which often sponsored such memorials.
