Helen Herron Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft, is shown unveiling the statue of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian-born officer who drilled the Continental Army at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777 to 1778. Ceremonies like this one, where a first lady or other prominent woman drew the cover from a monument, were a common feature of early twentieth-century public life in Washington. The picture comes from a glass negative made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures of officials, events and everyday city scenes give a close view of that era.
