Helen Herron Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft, appears at the unveiling of the von Steuben monument, a statue of the Prussian-born officer who drilled the Continental Army at Valley Forge in 1778. The statue stands in Lafayette Square in Washington, across from the White House. Bain News Service, a press agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs, made this glass negative, and its caption data is unverified, so the exact occasion and date are uncertain. Still, the image shows how ceremonies like this one drew official families and crowds to public monuments in the early twentieth century.
