The subject is the monument to the battleship Maine, a memorial to the sailors killed when the ship exploded in Havana harbor in February 1898. The monument was unveiled in 1913, fifteen years after the blast, and its dedication in New York that spring was a major civic event. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, recorded such ceremonies for newspapers. The record gives little detail about the scene itself, so the crowd and the ceremony are best read from the negative.
