The name on this glass negative, John B. Riley, comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote, and the record does not confirm who he was or when the picture was made. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early twentieth century, and George Grantham Bain's company built a large body of portraits and event photographs. Because the negative is a 5 x 7 inch or smaller glass plate, it reflects the standard working format of press photography of that era. Researchers should treat the identification as a starting point and check the Library of Congress catalog for any later corrections.
