This glass negative shows a portrait of a man identified as John M. Kelly, a name taken from caption cards or the negatives themselves, so the identification is unverified. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain that supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives were meant for quick reproduction, which is why so many portraits of public figures and everyday events survive from that period. The record gives no date, so the agency's working years and the plate format are the best clues to when the picture was made.
