John L. Stevens and his wife are identified only by name in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that operated from the early 1900s into the 1920s, supplied the title, and the record notes that the identification is unverified, so the sitters' roles and the occasion remain open. Bain's agency sold pictures of public figures, events and ordinary people to newspapers, and its glass plates, which were typically 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were a common format of that era.
