Frank Jay Gould, son of the railroad financier Jay Gould, is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service recorded with his wife. Gould moved in New York society and later developed resort properties on the French Riviera. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates capture the faces and fashions of the period. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that have not been independently verified, so the occasion is uncertain. The image is still a useful glimpse of a wealthy couple photographed for the press.
