This glass negative, from the Bain News Service's files, is titled for Helen Gould Shepard, a daughter of the financier Jay Gould and a well-known New York philanthropist. The record gives no date, and the title comes from the Bain caption cards, which the Library of Congress notes were not independently verified. George Grantham Bain ran a New York photo agency from about 1900 until the 1920s, supplying newspapers with pictures of public figures and events, so the portrait reflects the press photography of that era. Its small format is typical of the collection, and the glass plate itself is a useful record of how such news images were made and circulated.
