The caption card identifies the sitter as Frank Gould, though the record notes that this name is unverified and no date survives. If it is Frank Jay Gould, the son of financier Jay Gould, he was a wealthy New York socialite who later invested heavily in resort development on the French Riviera. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the portrait was probably made for publication rather than as a private keepsake.
