Four young women are named in the title of this glass negative, which places it among the many portraits the Bain News Service produced in New York in the early 1900s. The Bain agency, run by George Grantham Bain, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its files hold a great deal of street scenes, celebrities, and people in the news. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards the agency wrote itself, so the names and the occasion are unverified. Because the plate is a glass negative, the sharpness and tonal range are worth noting, since they reflect the large-format equipment that press photographers of the period relied on.
