Pauline Frederick, a stage and silent-screen actress, is shown here in a role titled "Potiphar's wife," the biblical character who accuses Joseph in Genesis. The title comes from the Bain News Service caption cards, and the record notes it has not been verified, so the costume and staging are the best guides to the production. Bain's studio made portraits of performers, politicians and newsworthy figures for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives, made in large format, capture the detail and tonal range of that period's studio work.
