Coney Island, the Brooklyn seaside amusement district on the southern tip of Long Island, is the place named here, and the catalog dates the view to January 3, 1915, when the rides and boardwalk concessions were typically shut for the winter. The glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its title and date rest on the agency's own unverified notes, so the scene itself is the best guide to what was happening.
