The caption names Gen. Radyo Dimitrieff and the Chataldja (Çatalca) lines, a fortified ridge about 40 miles west of Constantinople. Bulgarian and Ottoman forces faced each other there during the First Balkan War of 1912-1913. The record gives no date, and the name and place come from caption cards that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, attached to its negatives without verification. Bain's glass negatives were often sent to newspapers and magazines on deadline, so the picture likely reflects the press interest in the Balkan conflict at the time.
