Few commanders of the prewar Habsburg army were as prominent as Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, whose name this glass negative carries in the Bain collection. He served as chief of the Austro-Hungarian General Staff for much of the years before 1914 and pressed hard for military action against Serbia, shaping the empire's war planning. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, sent images like this one to newspapers in the early twentieth century, when European commanders drew strong American interest. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the sitting and its date remain uncertain.
