This glass negative is captioned "Gen. Von Pluskow who took Lodz," tying it to the German advance into Poland in the autumn of 1914. The Bain News Service recorded that attribution on the negatives or caption cards, but the record marks it as unverified, so the officer's identity should be read with some caution. Lodz, then part of the Russian Empire and a major textile center, changed hands during the fighting that season. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied wartime pictures like this one to American newspapers, which makes the plate a useful glimpse of how the war was presented to readers at the time.
