The name on this glass negative, Gen. von Gieslingen, is the only identifying detail the record offers, and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from the Bain News Service's caption cards and has not been independently verified. The picture itself is undated, so its exact moment is unknown. George Grantham Bain's agency, based in New York in the early 1900s, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its staff often labeled plates in a hurry, so names and places were sometimes recorded imperfectly. Because the negative is a small glass plate of 5 by 7 inches or less, it reflects the everyday working format of press photography from that era.
