The name Gen. Grippenberg comes from the Bain News Service's own caption cards and negative notes, and the Library of Congress lists it as unverified, so treat it as a lead rather than a settled fact. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the files of a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass plates of this size were a standard tool of press photographers of that era, and the missing date is a reminder of how often agency pictures lost their details once they left the studio.
