Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the French commander who was named supreme Allied commander in the final year of the First World War, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service. Bain was a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, and its glass plates, made roughly between 1900 and 1920, capture many wartime and postwar figures. The record gives no date, and the title is unverified, so the exact occasion is unknown. Foch's leadership in 1918 helped coordinate the Allied armies that pushed back the German offensives on the Western Front, which made him one of the most photographed generals of the era.
