The name on this glass negative is Gen. Joseph Joffre, the French army commander who directed his country's defense in the early months of World War I. The record's title comes from the Bain News Service caption information, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified, so the identification rests on that label rather than on a confirmed date. Joffre became a national hero after the Marne campaign in September 1914, when French and British forces halted the German advance toward Paris. He later toured the United States in 1917 to press for American support, and the Bain agency, a New York news photo service, regularly photographed visiting dignitaries and wartime figures like him.
